The Spark on a European Road Trip

The story of Leatherman begins not in a workshop, but on the road. In 1975, Tim Leatherman, then 25 years old, was traveling through Europe and the Middle East with his girlfriend in an old Volkswagen Beetle. The vehicle suffered repeated mechanical breakdowns, and Leatherman found himself frustrated by the lack of adequate tools to handle repairs on the go.

During those frustrating roadside fixes, the idea took shape: what if there were a pair of pliers that folded compactly into a pocket-sized tool, with wire cutters, knives, and other implements accessible without removing the tool from your pocket?

Years of Development and Rejection

After returning home, Tim spent eight years developing his concept. He sketched designs, built prototypes, and tirelessly pitched his idea to every major tool and knife company he could find. Each one turned him down. None believed there was a market for a pliers-based multi-tool.

Refusing to give up, Tim partnered with friend Steve Berliner. Together, they raised capital and committed to bringing the vision to life themselves.

1983: The First Multi-Tool Launch

In 1983, Leatherman Tool Group was officially formed in Portland, Oregon. That same year, they launched their first product—the Pocket Survival Tool (PST). It featured pliers as the main implement, with additional tools including wire cutters and several folding blades, all housed in compact handles.

Sales started modestly at a few thousand units in the first year. But word spread quickly. By 1984, they sold 29,000 units. In 1985, sales jumped to 70,000 units.

Growth and Expansion

Over the next four decades, Leatherman transformed from a small startup into a globally recognized brand. As of February 2011, the company reported producing 50 different products sold in 82 countries, with an estimated 55 percent market share in the United States.

The product line expanded far beyond the original PST. Leatherman developed tools for everyday carry, outdoor enthusiasts, professionals, military personnel, and law enforcement agencies. Popular models like the Wave, Surge, and Skeletool became staples among EDC communities worldwide.

Manufacturing Roots Remain in Portland

Despite its global reach, Leatherman has maintained a strong connection to its origins. All Leatherman multi-tools continue to be manufactured in Portland, Oregon, where the company was founded. The company's facility employs local workers and maintains the same commitment to quality that Tim Leatherman envisioned nearly 50 years ago.

Today, approximately 8,000 Leatherman tools are created daily across the company's production lines.

Legacy of Innovation

Leatherman's story represents more than just business success—it established an entire product category. While Swiss Army knives existed before, Leatherman pioneered the pliers-based multi-tool that combined utility, portability, and durability in a way that resonated with millions of users worldwide.

As Tim Leatherman once noted, his goal was simple: create a tool that would solve real problems, wherever you encountered them. Over 40 years later, that mission continues to drive innovation at Leatherman Tool Group.
